RIC To Face Eastern Connecticut in LEC Tournament on Tuesday Night

Providence, R.I.-Senior outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) tallied 39 kills and 17 digs, while senior setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) dished out 77 assists, to lead Rhode Island College to a pair of Senior Day victories at a tri-match held at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon. 


Rhode Island College (13-15, 3-4 LEC) topped Plymouth State, 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 26-28, 25-19), in the opening match of the day to clinch the fifth-seed in the upcoming 2012 Little East Conference Women’s Volleyball Tournament. The Anchorwomen will hit the road to face fourth-seeded Eastern Connecticut in the first round on Tuesday, Oct. 30 (7 p.m.).


Boyer paced RIC with 22 kills and 10 digs in the win over PSU, while Ho handed out 48 assists and four aces. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) chipped in with 12 kills and a pair of aces, while junior outside hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) posted 22 digs to go along with eight kills, three aces and two blocks. Freshman outside hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) finished with 10 kills.

Senior outside hitter Casey Stoodley (Salem, NH) notched 17 kills and 16 digs to lead the Panthers in the loss. Thanks in part to her effort, Plymouth State roared back from two sets down to top the Anchorwomen in the third set with a remarkable, 28-26, come from behind victory. However, PSU fell just short in the fourth set, 25-19, despite bouncing back from an early 14-2 deficit. Freshman setter Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, NH) registered 27 assists to help pace the Panthers, while junior libero Cassie Pelton (Brookline, NH) contributed 22 digs.


In the final match of the day, the Anchorwomen cruised to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-23) victory over Worcester State (12-14). Boyer led the way with 17 kills, while Ho tallied 29 assists in the win. Cabral added 11 kills and five digs, while freshman libero Jasmyn Starr (Gilford, NH) finished with nine digs.

Sophomore setter Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) dished out 23 assists, eight digs and two blocks to lead the Lancers, while sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) registered nine kills. Junior libero Vicki O’Brien (Canton, MA) added 10 digs.


In the middle match, Plymouth State knocked off Worcester State, 3-0 (32-30, 25-17, 25-18) to seal the split. Stoodley finished with 16 kills and 10 digs to guide the Panthers to the victory, while sophomore setter Hannah Anderson (Exeter, RI) chipped in with 34 assists and eight digs. On the other end, Lewis handed out 27 assists to pace the Lancers, while O’Brien contributed with 10 digs.


Aside from outstanding efforts from Boyer and Ho on Senior Day, Cabral recorded 19 kills, 27 digs, and four aces to spark the Anchorwomen, while Palazzini also chipped in with 19 kills. Starr recorded 19 digs and Malboeuf posted 14 kills to round out RIC’s top performers.


The Panthers were led by Stoodley, who finished with 33 kills, 26 digs and four aces, while Pelton contributed with 31 digs and a pair of aces. Freshman middle hitter Sam Clark (Coventry, RI) and senior middle hitter Elissa Morin (Nashua, NH) finished with 18 and 16 kills, respectively.


The Lancers were paced by Lewis, who handed out 50 assists and added 13 digs, while Jasper tallied a team-high 16 kills on the day. O’Brien recorded 20 digs, while junior outside hitter Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) notched 15 digs and 12 kills.
