Bridgewater, Mass-Despite a two-hit, two RBI night from senior first baseman/right fielder Jessica Borden (Lincoln, RI), the Rhode Island College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with Bridgewater State at Alumni Park in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

RIC (10-8) fell to Bridgewater State (7-9) in the first contest of the day, 8-6, before dropping the nightcap, 5-2.

In game one, sound pitching from junior right-hander Amber White (Middleboro, MA) and timely hitting late in the game spearheaded the Bears en route to their two-run victory. With the score knotted at one, Bridgewater State added two runs in the fourth on an RBI single from freshman first baseman Meagan Pacheco (Somerset, MA) and an RBI single from senior catcher Brianna Strecker (Waterford, CT) to jump ahead by two.

The Anchorwomen answered back in the top of the fifth with a trio of runs to take a 4-3 lead, keyed by a two-run single from Borden that plated both sophomore shortstop Katelyn Sykora (Waterford, CT) and senior catcher Nicole Clemens (Bristol, RI).

However, the Bears bounced right back in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead thanks to a two-run home run from senior center fielder Courtney Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA) and added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the, 8-4, victory.

White earned the win (5-3) after allowing just four runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk, while striking out eight in a seven-inning complete game.

Freshman right-hander Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) suffered the loss (0-3) for RIC.

In game two, the Bears again used stellar pitching to come away with the victory, this time behind the right arm of senior pitcher Meghan Dunn (Colchester, CT). Dunn scattered just two runs (one earned) on four hits and five walks, while striking out five in a seven-inning complete game.

The Bears plated two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back, adding a run in the second and two runs in the sixth en route to the, 5-2, victory.

The Anchorwomen mustered a run in the top of the second thanks to an RBI double from sophomore shortstop Carli Matrisian (Milford, CT) and tacked on another run in the top of the seventh when Borden scored on an RBI ground out from freshman right fielder Abigail Francis (Worcester, MA).

Junior right-hander Maria Darling (Ansonia, CT) was impressive in relief for RIC, allowing just two unearned runs on three hits and three walks in 4.2 innings of work. Freshman right-hander Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) was tagged with the loss (2-3).

Borden went 2-for-7 on the day with a double, one RBI, one stolen base and one run scored, while Sykora finished with two hits, a stolen base and two runs scored. Junior center fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) added a pair of hits, two walks and a run scored, while senior second baseman Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, CT) tallied a pair of hits as well to go along with a double and a stolen base.
