Providence, R.I.-Senior first baseman Kelly Paterson (Southington, CT) went 5-for-7 with two doubles, seven RBI and two runs scored as Eastern Connecticut swept a doubleheader from Rhode Island College (7-0, 14-6) in Little East Conference action played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Anchorwomen (15-17, 4-4 LEC) threatened to take the early lead in game one, loading the bases with nobody out, but Eastern senior pitcher Christine Akcer (Milford, CT) got out of the jam with a pair of ground outs and a strikeout.

The Warriors (22-8, 9-1 LEC) took the lead in the fourth inning as junior center fielder Mattie Brett (Waterford, CT) singled to left field and moved up to second. Sophomore designated player Sam Rossetti (Shelton, CT) singled and advanced to put runners on the second and third with no outs. Brett scored on junior left fielder Megan Godwin’s (Manchester, CT) RBI fielder’s choice bunt and freshman pinch hitter Alicia White (Colchester, CT) brought in two with a single to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, freshman shortstop Alyssa Hancock (Waterford, CT) led off with a double and moved to third on junior third baseman Arielle Cooper’s (Mystic, CT) infield single to shortstop. Cooper stole second to put runners on second and third with one out. Godwin and Patterson were issued back-to-back walks, with the latter plating Hancock to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

Eastern Connecticut tacked on two additional runs in the sixth as a pair of errors allowed freshman right fielder Alyssa Dumphy (Southington, CT) and Hancock to reach.  Cooper came through with a one out, two-run single up the middle to bring in the pair.

 Senior Emily Johnson

In the seventh, sophomore pinch hitter Shannon Martin (Wethersfield, CT) smacked a leadoff double, was sacrificed to second and trotted home on a Paterson RBI single.

RIC senior pitcher Emily Johnson (West Kingston, RI) took the loss (7-4), allowing four runs on six hits along with three strikeouts. Akcer earned the complete game victory (6-0) with her second shutout effort of the year. She allowed four hits and struck out six in seven innings.

In game two, the Anchorwomen put across their first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the second. Sophomore third baseman Justina Thoma (Canterbury, CT) ripped a one out double and moved up to third on a Johnson single. Freshman catcher Tori Lussier (North Franklin, CT) came through with an RBI single to stake the hosts to a 1-0 lead.

In the third, Rhode Island College loaded the bases with two down and Johnson came through with an RBI single to increase the Anchorwomen’s lead to two runs.

The early deficit woke up the Warrior bats in the third as Brett led off with a triple to left center and immediately scored on White’s RBI double down the right field line. After Godwin singled, Martin walked to load the bases. Paterson and sophomore first baseman Sam Rossetti (Shelton, CT) each drew walks to bring in the second and third runs of the frame.

With no outs and the sacks full, freshman catcher Taylor Smyth (Meriden, CT) picked up an RBI with a ground out to first. A wild pitch allowed Paterson to score to cap the frame’s scoring as Eastern built a 5-2 lead.

RIC freshman designated player Shannon Laiho (West Greenwich, RI) singled to lead off the fourth, was sacrificed to second and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Laiho was able to score after senior second baseman Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, CT) grounded out, as she ran home after the putout to make the score 5-3.

In the fifth, Brett picked up where she left off as she began the inning with a single up the middle. White followed with a single and a throwing error allowed Brett to score. Martin kept the momentum going with an RBI single and Paterson brought in two more with a double to right center.

The inning got worse for the Anchorwomen as a wild pitch and a Cooper RBI single put the hosts behind the eight ball, 11-3, heading into the bottom of the fifth.  In the home half of the inning, the Anchorwomen got RBI ground outs by Lussier and Laiho to avoid the eight-run rule and prolong the game.

In the top of the seventh, Eastern scored three more times, highlighted by a two-run double by Paterson. Johnson knocked in one in the club’s final at-bat to account for the final margin.

Martin earned the win (6-2), allowing two runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of relief. RIC senior pitcher Jessica Borden (Lincoln, RI) took the loss (3-3).

Brett went 4-for-9 with a triple and four runs scored, while Cooper also went 4-for-9 with three RBI and a stolen base.
