Providence, R.I.-Sophomore third baseman Justina Thoma (Canterbury, CT) went 2-for-5 with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBI as Rhode Island College swept a doubleheader from UMass Dartmouth, 4-2, 9-1 (5), in Little East Conference action played at the Dayna. A. Bazar Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon.


The Corsairs (11-25, 3-9 LEC) took an early lead in game one as sophomore center fielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA) led off with a double to left field, moved over to third on a ground out and came home on senior catcher Breanna Marcyoniak’s (Westfield, MA) RBI single.

In the fourth, UMD increased its lead to 2-0 as the visitors loaded the bases with one down. Marcyoniak came through with an RBI single to right field, but RIC senior pitcher Emily Johnson (West Kingston, RI) was able to limit the damage by getting two ground outs.


The Anchorwomen (18-18, 7-5 LEC) erased their deficit in the fifth inning as Johnson led off with a single to center field and was lifted for freshman pinch runner Shannon Laiho (West Greenwich, RI). Sophomore third baseman Justina Thoma (Canterbury, CT) followed by crushing a homer (2) to deep center field to make it a new ballgame.

RIC broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore shortstop Katelyn Sykora (Waterford, CT) singled to right field and senior second baseman Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, CT) walked. Junior center fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) smacked a double to right center field to bring in both runners with what proved to be the game-winning RBI.


Johnson closed the door in the seventh to earn the win (8-4). She allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five. UMD freshman pitcher Shannon Orton (Swansea, MA) took the loss (5-11). She allowed four runs on eight hits and K’d four.

In the nightcap, RIC scored three runs in the home half of the second as Laiho got the rally rolling with an RBI double. Senior pitcher Jessica Borden (Lincoln, RI) picked up an RBI when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jandreau singled in a run.


RIC opened up an 8-0 led with five more runs in the fourth. Pokora smacked a two-run double with the bases full and Thoma belted her second homer (3) of the day, a three-run shot, to round out the frame’s scoring.


UMD scored its lone run in the fifth as junior shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA) posted an infield single that brought home sophomore second baseman Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA).

The Anchorwomen ended the game early as Jandreau plated freshman left fielder Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) with one out in the fifth to enact the eight-run rule.


Borden picked up the win (4-4), allowing the lone run on five hits. UMD sophomore Becky Williams (Hope Valley, RI) took the loss (3-5).


Pokora went 3-for-6 with a double, four RBI and a run scored, while Johnson and Jandreau also picked up three base knocks, respectively.


Marcyoniak went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Corsairs.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Tufts on Thursday, April 25 (4 p.m.).
