RIC to Face Plymouth State in LEC Tournament

Boston, Mass.-Junior right-hander Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) fired a complete game, six-hit shutout to lead the Rhode Island College softball team to a 4-0 victory in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader with UMass Boston at the UMB Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.


UMass Boston (15-25, 5-9 LEC) held Rhode Island College (19-21, 8-6 LEC) scoreless in the first game of the twin bill en route to a 2-0 victory to open the Senior Day festivities for the Beacons.


The fifth-seeded Anchorwomen will open the 2013 Little East Conference Softball Tournament on Thursday, May 2 against second-seeded Plymouth State (2 p.m.), while the sixth-seeded Beacons will square off against top-seeded Eastern Connecticut on Thursday (12 p.m.).

Eastern Connecticut will host the six-team, double elimination tournament, beginning on Thursday. Western Connecticut earned the No. 3 seed by virtue of its combined 3-1 record against Keene State and Rhode Island College, as all three teams finished with identical records Little East Conference play. Fourth-seeded KSC held a combined record of 2-2, while RIC went 1-3.


Freshman right-hander Emily Gray (New Bedford, MA) carried UMass Boston to a playoff-clinching game one victory after scattering eight hits and one walk, improving her record to 8-12 along the way.


Senior right-hander Emily Johnson (West Kingston, RI) was tagged with the loss (8-5) after allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks, while fanning six batters in six innings. 


Junior right fielder Lyndsey Capra (Lowell, MA) singled home senior third baseman and former Anchorwoman Kelsey Souza (Braintree, MA) in the second for the first run of the game, while senior second baseman Sue Killilea (Abington, MA) scored on an RBI single to center field off the bat of sophomore catcher Samantha Hemstock (Northford, CT) in the third to make it, 2-0.

RIC bounced back strong in the nightcap behind the right arm of Sylvestre and two-run first inning. Sophomore third baseman Justin Thoma (Canterbury, CT) ripped a double to left field that plated both senior second baseman Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, CT) and senior right fielder Jessica Borden (Lincoln, RI) to make it, 2-0, after the top of the first.


The Anchorwomen never looked back from there, as the visitors ran away with the four-run victory after adding their third run of the game in the second thanks an RBI double from Sylvestre and their fourth run of the game in the third following an RBI single from Johnson.


Sylvestre was brilliant for RIC and improved to 4-6 on the year after striking out one and walking none in seven innings.


Sophomore right-hander Michelle Zullo (Everett, MA) took the loss (7-13), allowing four earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out five.


Junior center fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) chipped in with three hits and two stolen bases to pace RIC offensively, while Thoma added three hits as well.


Souza and junior third baseman Erika Vecchiet (Pequannock, NJ) each posted three hits for UMB on the day.
