RIC Advances to Little East Title Game

Mansfield, Conn.-Sophomore third baseman Justina Thoma (Canterbury, CT) doubled in two runs in the top of the first, while junior pitcher Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) allowed just one run on four hits, to lead fifth-seeded Rhode Island College past top-seed and tournament host Eastern Connecticut, 2-1, in game nine of the 2013 Little East Conference Softball Tournament.

The Anchorwomen (22-22) advance to play third-seeded Western Connecticut at 2:15 p.m. RIC will need to defeat the unbeaten Colonials twice, in order to claim the league title. Eastern Connecticut (28-14), which lost to Western Connecticut, 1-0, in game eight, is eliminated from the tournament.

With two down in the top of the first, senior second baseman Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, CT) reached on an error and junior center fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) walked to set up Thoma's heroics. Thoma doubled to right center, which brought in both runners and stake the visitors to a 2-0 lead.

The hosts answered right back in the bottom of the first as freshman shortstop Alyssa Hancock (Waterford, CT) homered to left field to cut Eastern's deficit to one run, 2-1.

The pitchers took over from there as Sylvestre and senior Christina Akcer (Milford, CT) kept the opposition off the scoreboard.

The Warriors threatened by putting runners on first and third with two down in the bottom of the seventh, but Sylvestre got a ground out to send RIC to the title game.

Thoma went 2-for-3 for the Anchorwomen. Akcer took the loss (7-5), allowing two unearned runs on five hits to go along with three strikeouts.
