Turner Scores as Anchorwomen Fall to Curry, 3-1

Milton, Mass.-Sophomore forward Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, RI) netted the lone goal for the Rhode Island College women’s soccer team, while junior goalkeeper Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) made nine saves in net as the Anchorwomen fell to Curry College, 3-1, in non-conference action at Walter M. Katz Field on Saturday afternoon.

After a quiet first half, Curry (1-0) jumped out to an early, 1-0, lead behind freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Lima’s (New Bedford, MA) unassisted goal in the 52nd minute of action. Yet, Rhode Island College (0-1) answered right back in the 58th minute when Turner found the back of the net to tie the game at one.

The Colonels began to pull away from RIC through the latter stages of the second half, led by an offensive explosion from the hosts, as sophomore forward Taylor Evans (Middleton, MA) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 68th minute after connecting on a pass from junior midfielder Danielle Kent (Pocasset, MA) to make it, 2-1.

The Colonels outshot the Anchorwomen, 16-6, and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Hayley Lorge (Beverly, MA) made three saves for Curry in the win (1-0).

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hits the road to face Roger Williams University on Tuesday (4 p.m.).
