RIC Picks Up First Win vs. the Seahawks Since 2004

Newport, R.I.-Junior Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) won in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) at No. 2 singles to clinch a 5-4 win for the Rhode Island College women's team over Salve Regina on Thursday afternoon at the Leroy Avenue Courts.


It is the first win for the Anchorwomen (3-0) vs. the Seahawks (0-2) since 2004.


Brown and sophomore Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI) secured an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles, while freshmen Noelle Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) and Julie Reddy (Greenville, RI) earned an 8-6 win at second doubles, to give the visitors a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Sophomore Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) won (6-4, 6-2) at No. 1 singles and Reddy won (6-4, 6-3) at No. 4 singles, but the hosts won at No. 3, 5 and six, respectively, to deadlock the contest 3-3.


After dropping the opening set, Brown back to take the next two to secure the win for the Anchorwomen. Brown's match finished just in time as darkness was about to end the match before a winner could be declared.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Suffolk on Saturday, Sept. 7 (noon).
