Morgan Stewart Registers a Match-High
11 Digs in, 3-0, Setback to Wheaton
Creighton’s Five Aces Spark Lyons

Providence, R.I.-Senior middle hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) totaled eight kills and four digs, while sophomore outside hitter Morgan Stewart (Willington, CT) tallied a match-high 11 digs, as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team fell to Wheaton College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-21), at the Rhode Island College Recreation Center on Tuesday night in non-conference action.

After Wheaton (3-1) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the opening set, Rhode Island College (0-5) bounced back to tie things up at six thanks to a timely kill from Cabral. However, keyed by five service aces from sophomore outside hitter Arieanne Creighton (Brookline, NH), the Lyons surged ahead to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, en route to a 25-16 win in the first set.

In the second set, the Anchorwomen held an early, 10-4, lead before Wheaton clawed its way back to force a tie game, 11-11. Both squads went back and forth, with the hosts holding onto a slight lead for the majority of the set, until a kill from senior right side hitter Lindsay Tebbets (Gilmanton, NH) forced another tie, 20-20. After the two teams once again exchanged points, RIC leaped ahead for a 23-21 lead, spearheaded by a service ace from Stewart and clutch kill from sophomore outside hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI). Yet, the Lyons rallied for four straight points, capped off by sophomore middle hitter Elise Waedler’s (San Diego, CA) set-sealing kill, to pull away from RIC, 25-23.

After Wheaton stormed ahead of the hosts early in the third set to take a 9-2 lead, the Anchorwomen, sparked by a pair of kills from Cabral, responded with a 13-6 run of their own to force a 15-15 tie. However, led by a pair of aces from both sophomore right side hitter Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, CA) and freshman outside hitter Gaby Gryko (Moraga, CA), the Lyons eventually pulled away from RIC en route to a 25-21 victory in what proved to be the decisive set.

Wilson dished out 19 assists for the Lyons to go along with seven kills, seven digs and three aces, while sophomore setter Page Gustofson (So. Lake Tahoe, CA) added 13 assists of her own. Meanwhile, Waedler led the offensive attack with eight kills, while Tebbets and sophomore outside hitter Taylor Matook (Exeter, RI) each chipped in with seven winners. Sophomore libero Robyn D’Agostino (Three Bridges, NJ) contributed with nine digs and four aces for the Lyons, who finished with 16 aces as a team.

On the other end, Malboeuf registered six kills for RIC, while sophomore right side hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) handed out a team-high 12 assists. Sophomore right side hitter Adriana Ambari (Beacon Falls, CT) posted three kills and two aces in the loss, while freshman libero Nicole Thibodeau (Loxahatchee, FL) tallied five digs.
