Providence, R.I.-Junior forward Danielle Peloquin (Pawtucket, RI) racked up a pair of goals to go along with an assist, while sophomore Chelsea Combs (Ashford, CT) tacked on a goal and two assists, in Rhode Island College’s, 4-0, win over Becker College on Wednesday evening in non-conference women’s soccer action played at the RIC Soccer Field.

Rhode Island College (3-5-1) snaps a four-game losing skid with the lopsided victory, while Becker (3-7) drops its second consecutive contests.

The Anchorwomen offense was running on all cylinders on Wednesday, as the hosts rattled off a whopping 45 shots in the win, including 26 shots in the first half alone and 21 shots on net throughout the entirety of the contest.

 Freshman defender Angela Ragosta

Following a plethora of missed opportunities for RIC, the scoring onslaught finally began in the 18th minute of action after freshman defender Angela Ragosta (Greenville, RI) collected the ball at midfield and skipped a long pass to Combs up the right sideline. Combs charged towards the box and fired a laser at Becker junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Rose (North Attleboro, MA). The shot bounced in and out of the arms of Rose and ricocheted over Peloquin, who pounced on the loose ball and chipped in a close range shot into the back of the net for the first score of the game.

In the 38th minute, the Anchorwomen added to their lead following a goal from Combs, her second of the season. Rhode Island College forward Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, RI) took a feed from Peloquin and raced towards the left side of the box. After sprinting past the defender, she dished to an open Combs, who was waiting patiently on the far side of the box. Combs corralled the pass, quickly wheeled around Rose, and blasted a shot past the netminder from five yards out to give the hosts a two-goal advantage.

 Sophomore forward Charissa Champagne

RIC tacked on its third score of the game midway through the second half, after opening the stanza with nearly 20 minutes of scoreless action. In the 69th minute, after the ball repeatedly changed hands in the middle of the box, Combs gathered a loose ball in the thick of the Becker defensive unit and quickly dished to sophomore forward Charissa Champagne (North Providence, RI). Champagne managed to fight through traffic and sent rolling pass to Peloquin, who chopped a slow, rolling shot past the diving arms of Rose from about 10 yards out and into the front-left corner of the net.

The Anchorwomen garnered their fourth and final goal in the 85th minute, when junior midfielder Lauren Maisano (Bristol, RI) looked to make a play by sending a long cross from the right side of the box towards the net. However, after the cross was redirected out of the box by a Hawk defender, freshman midfielder Jaclyn Greenman (Waterford, CT) gathered the loose ball and launched a strike from the top of the box past Rose for her third score of the season.

Peloquin has now recorded seven goals on the season to go along with three assists for 17 points on the year, which ranks second in the Little East Conference. Meanwhile, the assists for Ragosta and Champagne on Wednesday were the first career points for both players.

RIC junior goalkeeper Audrey Maia (Norton, MA), who improved to 3-5-1 on the year with the win, was seldom tested on Wednesday. She faced just six shots, including one shot in the second half, and was forced to make only three saves. Meanwhile, Rose made 17 saves in the loss (1-5) for Becker.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference play at Keene State on Saturday, Oct. 5 (6 p.m.).
