Providence, R.I.-Sophomore outside hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) racked up a career-high 20 kills to propel the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team to a 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-20) win over Eastern Nazarene in non-conference action at The Murray Center on Thursday night.

The victory is the first of the season for Rhode Island College (1-16), while Eastern Nazarene (7-12) drops its fifth contest in a row.

The Lions jumped to an early lead after taking the first set, 25-18. Senior middle blocker Leann Williams (Oxford, PA) spearheaded the run with a strong service game, while sophomore outside hitter Hannah Welsh (Derry, NH) chalked up five kills in the set to lead Eastern Nazarene.

The Anchorwomen recovered in the second set to knot the match at one, keyed by an excellent effort from Malboeuf, who posted seven kills in the second set alone. RIC held a 19-16 lead before four straight kills from junior outside hitter Kortney Jenkins (Bunker Hill, WV) gave the Lions a 20-19 advantage. However, the hosts pulled away from the visitors down the stretch, as senior outside hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) slammed home the final kill to give the Anchorwomen the, 25-22, victory.

In what proved to be a remarkably even set in which both teams hit exactly .276, Rhode Island College again pulled away from Eastern Nazarene late in the third frame en route to a 25-23 win. After the two teams went back and forth throughout the set, Malboeuf registered the final three kills to put RIC ahead of the Lions, 2-1, in the match. The Anchorwomen tallied six service aces in the third set, which included a pair of aces from sophomore right side hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) and sophomore middle hitter Adriana Ambari (Beacon Falls, CT).

In the fourth and final set, RIC gained some late momentum in order to finish off Eastern Nazarene, 25-20, en route to the, 3-1, win. Malboeuf recorded five kills along the way, including the game-winner.

Malboeuf paced RIC with the 20 kills, which stands as a season-high for any member of the Anchorwomen, while also adding 10 digs and one ace. Cabral added 10 kills, 16 digs, two blocks and one ace, while junior libero Karla Santizo (Warwick, RI) finished with 19 digs on the night.

Sophomore setter Emma Cajthaml (El Cajon, CA) was the primary distributor, as she handed out a career-high 23 assists in the win, while also adding 15 digs and three aces. Palazzini chipped in with 17 assists, nine digs, seven kills, two aces and one block. Ambari was solid as well for RIC, finishing with four kill, four blocks, three aces and three digs.

On the other side of the court, senior middle blocker Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, MA) led the Lions with 18 kills, 10 digs and two aces, while Welsh totaled 12 kills and six digs. Freshman setter Lauryl Berger (Laurel, DE) dished out 37 assists and added seven digs. Jenkins contributed with eight kills and 16 digs, while freshman outside hitter Vanessa Pascal (Marlborough, MA) finished with 20 digs in the loss.
