Providence, R.I.-Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) posted 12 kills and seven digs, while middle hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) was honored on Senior Night, as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team fell to Western Connecticut, 3-0, in Little East Conference action played at The Murray Center on Tuesday night.


Western Connecticut (23-7, 4-2 LEC) jumped out to a hot start and knocked off Rhode Island College (3-25, 0-6 LEC) in the first set of the night, 25-16, before running into some trouble in the second set of the match. After the Anchorwomen and Colonials went back and forth throughout the second set, with both teams hitting .255, the visitors finally fended off RIC en route to a 27-25 victory. Western Connecticut closed out the hosts in the third and final set, 25-12.

Freshman outside hitter Karissa Smith (Bristol, CT) racked up 11 kills, 14 digs, and two aces to pace the Colonials, while freshman outside hitter Jacqueline Kanuk (New Fairfield, CT) hit .625 and added 10 kills, four digs and three aces. Freshman setter Danielle Kaminsky (Southington, CT) handed out 20 assists to go along with four digs and two kills, while junior setter Jenny Hogan (Franklin Square, NY) dished out 12 assists of her own.


Junior outside hitter Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, CT) corralled 10 digs and added two kills and one ace for Western. Junior libero Shirley Rodriguez (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) chipped in with 12 digs on the night. Sophomore outside hitter Cady Cordes (Fallon, NV) registered seven kills, six digs, two assists and one aces, while junior middle hitter Heather Williams (Kingston, NY) hit .455 and recorded six kills, three blocks and two digs.


Palazzini added two aces and two assists to help pace the Anchorwomen, while Cabral hit .238 and contributed seven kills, four digs, two blocks and one ace in her final home game. Sophomore setter Emma Cajthaml (El Cajon, CA) finished with 24 assists and three digs.


Sophomore outside hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) posted six kills and 11 digs to go along with a pair of blocks and one ace. Freshman libero Nicole Thibodeau (Loxahatchee, FL) totaled 12 digs and a pair of kills for RIC, while sophomore right side hitter Morgan Stewart (Willington, CT) chipped in with 11 digs.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will close out the 2013 season at Keene State on Saturday, Nov. 2 (noon).
