Providence, R.I.-Senior midfielder Jessalyn O’Neill (North Providence, RI), along with junior attackers Danielle Landon (Wading River, NY) and Jessica Ricci (Hope, RI), each scored a pair of goals, but the Rhode Island College women’s lacrosse team fell at Western Connecticut, 23-9, in Little East Conference action played at the Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.


Western (3-5, 2-0 LEC) senior midfielder Hyla Costello (Southington, CT) scored seven goals to lead the Colonials in the win.


For the second straight Saturday, Costello went on a scoring frenzy.  A week ago, she netted eight goals in a 19-10 victory at UMass Dartmouth.  For her effort against the Corsairs, she was named Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Today, five of Costello's goals game in the second half as Western pulled away from the Anchorwomen (3-3, 0-2 LEC). She leads Western with 32 goals in eight games.


Freshman Destinee Carey (New Milford, CT), junior Kelsey Heaton (New Milford, CT) and senior Elena Gayton (Ellington, CT) each scored four goals for the winners.  


Kirsten Hudock (Newtown, CT) and Chandler Camlin (Stamford, CT) scored three and one goal, respectively, for the hosts.


The Anchorwomen took an early lead when junior midfielder Lauren Maisano (Bristol, RI) scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from O’Neill.


Western scored six of the game's next seven goals and never looked back.  It took an 11-5 lead into the break.


WCSU senior goalie Karli Portnoy (Sea Cliff, NY) was stellar in goal for the Colonials with a 14-save effort. RIC senior goalie Taryn Carbone (Cranston, RI) made five saves, before giving way to sophomore Ana Medeiros (New Bedford, MA) for the final 25 minutes.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Becker on Tuesday, April 8 (6 p.m.).
