Willimantic, Conn.-Senior center fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) homered, while freshman second baseman Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI) contributed an RBI double, as part of a two-run fourth inning as sixth-seeded Rhode Island College defeated top seed and tourney host Eastern Connecticut, 3-1, in game one of the 2014 Little East Conference Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon.


The Anchorwomen (13-24) advance to face the loser of fourth-seeded UMass Dartmouth vs. third-seeded Western Connecticut (2 p.m.) tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. (game five). The Warriors (25-12) will play an elimination game vs. the loser of fifth-seeded Keene State and second-seeded Plymouth State (2 p.m.) today at 4 p.m. (game four).


The two clubs split the regular season back on April 19, with RIC losing game one, 4-1, and coming back to win game two, 3-1.

Eastern opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when junior right fielder Shannon Martin (Wethersfield, CT) led off with a double to right center field and was sacrificed to third. With two down, senior left fielder Stephanie Johnson (Plantsville, CT) singled to left center field to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.


RIC battled back in the fourth when Pokora led off with a solo blast (9) to left center field. With two down, senior first baseman Maria Darling (Ansonia, CT) singled to left field and sophomore catcher Tori Lussier (North Franklin, CT) was issued a walk. DiScuillo followed with an RBI double to right center to stake the Anchorwomen to a 2-1 lead.


The Anchorwomen got a valuable insurance run in the fifth when freshman left fielder Lindsey Cabral (North Providence, RI) reached on an infield single, moved to second on a Pokora foul out and scored on junior third baseman Justina Thoma's (Canterbury, CT) RBI single to left field.


The Warriors threatened in the bottom of the fifth by loading the bases with one down, but DiScuillo came up big by throwing out sophomore third baseman Samantha Rentz (Griswold, CT) at the plate. RIC senior pitcher Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI), then induced a ground out to end the threat.


Sylvestre allowed just one run on nine hits, while striking out four, en route to the win (7-10). Eastern junior starter Erin Miller (Waterford, CT) took the loss (10-5), surrendering two runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work.


Pokora went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.


Johnson went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the hosts, while senior center fielder Mattie Brett (Waterford, CT) went 2-for-4.
