Oneonta, N.Y.-Seniors Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA) and Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) each went 3-0 as the Rhode Island College wrestling team went 2-1 at the Oneonta Duals on Saturday afternoon to open the 2013-14 season.


Barrucci sandwiched a pin between two decisions at 157 lbs., while Nicoll picked up two decisions and a forfeit at heavyweight.

The Anchormen (2-1) went up against always tough Ithaca in its first match and came away with a 30-6 setback. RIC fell behind 14-0, before Barrucci dec. Kevin Collins, 1-0. The Bombers rattled off two decisions, a pin and a major dec. before Nicoll downed Chris Ramirez, 8-1, at 285 lbs. to close out the contest.

Rhode Island College moved on to face its hosts and fell behind, 6-0, after a forfeit at 125 lbs. The Anchormen got decisions from sophomore Damen Patisaul (Plant City, FL) at 133 lbs. and Kyle Lake (Toms River, NJ) to make it 9-6 after four matches. Barrucci put the Anchormen on top, 12-9, win a pin at 157 lbs., only to see Oneonta tie it with a decision a match later.



Senior 285 lbs. Brian Nicoll


Junior Rob Sotelo (Little Falls, NJ) gave the club some breathing room with a big pin at 174 lbs., and junior Brohen Krsulic (Brooklyn, CT) followed with a decision to stake RIC to a 21-12 advantage. A pin set up the decisive bout at 285 lbs., in which Nicoll outlasted Stephen Provenzano, 4-2 to secure the win.

Rhode Island College cruised by Alfred State, 51-6, in its final action of the day. Seven pins and a forfeit by the Anchormen put the match out of reach early.
