Bristol, R.I.-Sophomore Ricondo Cole (Cranston, RI) picked up a pair of decisions at 141 lbs. to improve to 18-3 on the season as the Rhode Island College wrestling team knocked off Southern Maine, 32-12, before falling to Roger Williams, 33-4, at a tri-match hosted by Roger Williams on Saturday afternoon.

The Anchormen stand at 14-3 on the season with an 8-2 record against New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) competition.

USM fell behind, 6-0, early in the opening match for the Anchormen, 6-0, following a forfeit at 174 lbs. After senior Jonathan Deupree (Ozona, FL) knocked off junior Brohen Krsulic (Brooklyn, CT), 3-2, in a hard-fought match at 184 lbs., RIC took a 10-4 lead over the Huskies following a 13-4 major decision from freshman John Georges (Cranston, RI) at 197 lbs.

A forfeit at 285 lbs. gave Southern Maine six points and briefly knotted the match, 10-10, before junior Jonathan Murray (Brentwood, NY) responded with an 11-3 major decision at 125 lbs. From there, the Anchormen began to pull away from the Huskies after USM forfeited at 133 lbs. and Cole took down freshman Carl Luth (Milford, CT), 8-2, at 141 lbs.

Trailing, 23-10, with three bouts left, freshman Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, ME) momentarily kept the Huskies alive with a 10-7 decision at 149 lbs. However, freshman Kyle Lake (Toms River, NJ) went on to seal the match for RIC with a 10-8 decision at 157 lbs., while sophomore Brandon Conrad (East Bridgewater, MA) rounded out the scoring at 165 lbs. with a pin at the 2:58 mark.

“We had a few guys really step up today and help us take care of business against Southern Maine,” said Rhode Island College Head Coach Jay Jones. “Krsulic wrestled nationally-ranked Deupree at 184 lbs. and came up just one point shy, while Georges also came up huge when he scored the major decision against Fagan, another ranked opponent.”

After faring well against the Southern Maine in the first match of the day, RIC struggled against Roger Williams in afternoon’s final contest. Spearheaded by sophomore David Welch’s (Salem, NH), 10-6, decision over junior Rob Sotelo (Little Falls, NJ) at 184 lbs. and senior Shane Parcel’s (Pine Brook, NJ), 3-0, decision over Krsulic at 197 lbs., the Hawks were able to open the match with four straight decisions to jump ahead of the Anchormen, 12-0. RWU gained six more points after RIC was forced to forfeit at 125 lbs. and soon added four more points to its total to take a 22-0 lead over RIC after freshman Pat Lacroix (Salem, NH) earned a 10-0 major decision at 133 lbs.

Cole finally managed to stop the bleeding for Rhode Island College at 141 lbs., as he earned an 11-3 decision over junior Dante Porrazzo (East Hanover, NJ) to make it, 22-3. However, the Hawks responded with back-to-back major decisions at 149 lbs. and 157 lbs., while senior Collin Crowell (Hampstead, NH) rounded out the scoring for the Hawks with a 2-1 decision at 165 lbs.

“We really needed our big guns against a very good team in Roger Williams, but you can’t have six starters out and expect to beat a team like that,” said Jones after the loss. “We did have several guys bump up weight classes to put it all out there. Sotelo bumped to 184 lbs. against a nationally-ranked wrestler in Welch, while Krsulic bumped up and wrestled tough against Parcel, who is among the top wrestlers in New England. In the end, they had the better team today, and we have to rally the troops to get prepared for our last three matches next weekend, and most importantly, the subsequent regional.”
