Norton, Mass.-Senior center fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) went 3-for-6 with a run scored, three RBI and a home run, but Rhode Island College lost two games at Wheaton on Tuesday afternoon at Clark Field.


The Lyons (17-1) defeated the Anchorwomen (3-9), 8-0 (six innings) in game one, and took game two, 12-5 (six innings) when the game was called early due to darkness.


 Junior shortstop Katelyn Sykora (Waterford, CT) was the only other Anchorwomen with a multiple-hit effort, going, 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.


 RIC senior pitcher Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) suffered the loss (2-3) in the opening game, allowing eight runs, only two of which were earned, on 13 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Freshman pitcher Lindsey Cabral (North Providence, RI) was the losing pitcher (1-2) in the nightcap.

Wheaton pounded out 25 hits and scored 20 runs in the sweep. In game one, junior Emily Berardi (Boston, MA) hurled a two-hit shutout to improve her record to 3-1 in the circle for the Lyons on the season. Berardi only faced three hitters over the minimum in throwing 87 pitches (54 for strikes) alongside one walk and a game-high four strikeouts.


Wheaton senior Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, MA) got the offense going after classmate Ashley Vertente (Fairhaven, MA) scored a on throwing error with a two-run single to center for a 3-0 advantage.


In the third, sophomore Jillian Rocha (Rehoboth, MA) added to the lead with a two-run double to center. Classmate Madeline Hatch (Acton, MA) capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI double to left field plating Rocha. 


The Lyons forced the mercy rule in the sixth pushing home a run on a throwing error and a bases loaded walk by Vertente.


Rocha bumped her record to 2-0 on the year throwing three innings of relief, yielding three hits, and one run (earned). Freshman Danielle Cimino (Cumberland, ME) got the start and went three innings, gave up six hits, four runs (all earned), one walk and struck out two hitters.


Pokora put RIC ahead 3-0 in the top of the first as she launched a three-run homer to left-center.


Berardi responded for the Lyons in the bottom half with a two-run blast, her first of the season, to cut into the deficit at 3-2.


In the second, the Anchorwomen scratched a run across home plate on a sacrifice bunt, while Wheaton freshman Rebecca Seifert (Franklin, MA) notched an RBI single through the right side and Hart plated a run on a groundout to even the score at 4-4.


The Lyons took the lead for good in the third as freshman Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, MA) slugged a grand slam to right field, her second home run of the season.


Sykora added an RBI double in the fourth, but Wheaton continued to supply its pitching staff runs with the long ball as Hatch crushed a two-run dinger to right-center in the fifth. Seifert also lifted a sac fly to center and senior tri-captain Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, MA) drew a bases loaded walk to round out the scoring for the Blue and White.


Hatch finished the doubleheader sweep going 4-for-6 with three runs, one double, a home run and three RBI. Brillon was 4-for-6 with a run, two doubles, two RBI and two walks, while Fairbanks went 3-for-6 with three runs, one double, one homer, four RBI and a 1.167 slugging percentage.


 In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Worcester State on Thursday, March 27 (4 p.m.).
