Providence, R.I.-Senior captain Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) picked up a straight set (6-4, 6-2) win at No. 3 singles and paired with freshman Kim Daigle (Sterling, MA) for an 8-1 win at first doubles as the Rhode Island College women’s tennis team cruised by Wentworth, 9-0, in the season-opening match for both squads.


The Anchorwomen (1-0) took all three doubles matches, starting with Brown and Daigle’s win over WIT (0-1) junior Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, MA) and classmate Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, MA).

Junior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) and sophomore Julie Reddy (Greenville, RI) followed with an 8-0 victory over Leopard freshmen Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, RI) and Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, MA).


RIC completed the sweep as sophomore Noelle Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) and freshman Isabella Romeo (Greenville, RI) secured an 8-6 win over juniors Nicole Mooney (Waterford, CT) and Laura Boyd (Woodstock, VT).


Although RIC took all six singles matches, it took over three hours to complete the match. Campanella took down McColgan (6-1, 6-1) at No. 1 singles, while it took Daigle three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) to defeat Corcoran for her first collegiate win at the second spot.

Reddy breezed past Jodoin (6-3, 6-0) at fourth singles and junior Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI) earned a straight-set (6-2, 6-3) win over Boyd at No. 5. Freshman Laura Nastasi (Smithville, NJ) downed Mooney (6-3, 6-4) for her first collegiate win at the sixth spot.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Clark on Tuesday, Sept. 2 (4 p.m.).
