Boston, Mass.-UMass Boston sophomore Julia Murphy (Canton, MA) tallied a match high 11 kills and hit .588 on the night as the Beacons defeated Rhode Island College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-14), in Little East Conference women’s volleyball action on Tuesday night.


UMass Boston (11-3, 1-0 LEC) opened the first set with a 20-8 run, capped by a kill from Murphy with an assist going to junior setter Emma Rocha (Boynton Beach, FL). A service error by Murphy would pull the Rhode Island College (3-7, 1-1 LEC) to within 13, but that is as close as the visitors would come as the Beacons took the first set, 25-11.

After an 8-1 run to start the second set for the Beacons, the Anchorwomen rallied off the three points to cut the lead to four, 8-4. With the score 18-7, RIC brought the score to within nine when junior middle hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) recorded a service ace to make the score 18-9. A Beacons hitting error would bring the Anchorwomen to within eight, 18-10, but UMB finished the set on a 7-4 run to take the 25-14 victory.


Junior outside hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) recorded a kill with an assist going to freshman Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) to make the score 2-2 early in the third set. The Beacons used an 18-5 run to take a commanding lead, 20-7, in the final stanza before coasting home with the 25-14 victory.


The Anchorwomen were led by Palazzini, who finished with a team high four kills. White led the team with eight assists while sophomore setter Megan Armburg (Swansea, MA) recorded a team high 14 digs.


Murphy tallied 11 kills and five solo blocks for the Beacons, while Rocha paced the team with 16 assists and five service aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, MN) led the team with 14 digs.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Elms to face both the Blazers and Castleton State on Saturday, Sept. 27 (Noon).
