Providence, R.I.-Junior forward Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, RI) erupted for four goals and one assist as the Rhode Island College women’s soccer team snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 5-2 come from behind victory over Mitchell College on Wednesday evening at the RIC Soccer Field.


Mitchell (1-7-1) opened the scoring in the third minute when senior midfielder Madeline Crow (Rockville, MD) took a cross and kicked it home to give the Mariners the 1-0 lead. They doubled their lead in the 12th minute when junior forward Taylor Silva (Hartford, CT) snuck another shot by Rhode Island College (2-9) senior netminder Audrey Maia (Norton, MA).

Turner halved the Mariner lead in the 23rd minute when she took a feed from sophomore midfielder Jaclyn Greenman (Waterford, CT) and found the back of the net with a shot. Turner scored again two minutes later with the assist going to freshman midfielder Stephanie Ricci (Smithfield, RI).


The remainder of the half saw no more goals but two ejections as Ricci and Silva were each issue a red card in the 38th minute for fighting. The two squads each played a man down for the remainder of the contest.

Turner completed the natural hat trick in the 56th minute when she found a loose ball and blasted it past Mitchell junior goalkeeper Katie McBride (Paris, France) to put the Anchorwomen up for good, 3-2. Six minutes later, Turner struck again with Greenman picking up her second assist of the game. Sophomore forward Elsa Almeida (Coventry, RI) rounded out the scoring by netting her first collegiate goal in the 70th minute off a feed from Turner.


Maia made one save in 14:17 of action, while classmate Justina Thoma (1-3) (Canterbury, CT) stopped four in relief. McBride (1-5) made 15 saves in defeat.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at Plymouth State on Saturday, Oct. 11 (11:30 a.m.).
