Salem, Mass.-Junior middle hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) notched another double-double as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team topped Salem State, 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-21), in non-conference action playedat Twohig gymnasium on Thursday night.


RIC (9-8) opened a 7-4 lead on Salem State (1-9), capped by a kill from Malboeuf on a pass from freshman setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI). The remainder of the set was a tightly contested affair, which saw neither team gain more than a three-point lead. With the score knotted at 24-24, the Anchorwomen rattled off two straight kills to take the first set, 26-24.

The Anchorwomen continued the momentum into the second set, opening a 22-10 advantage on a kill from junior outside hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI). The Vikings would record two more points in the set, but a kill by sophomore middle hitter Sierra Smith (Longmont, CO) off a feed from White gave the Anchorwomen the 25-12 victory and a 2-0 advantage in the match. 


The Vikings opened a 12-8 lead in the third set when freshman outside hitter Julie O’Coin (Marlborough, MA) picked up an ace. After a 10-5 RIC run, the Vikings tied the score at 18-18 when junior middle hitter Emily Peay (Lebanon, CT) tallied a service ace. The Vikings wouldn’t hold the lead for the remainder of the set however, and a ball handling error from O’Coin would be the final point to give the Anchorwomen the 25-21 set victory and the 3-0 sweep.


The Anchorwomen were led by Malboeuf who finished with team highs in kills (10) and digs (11). White led the team with 23 assists.


O’Coin led the Vikings with seven digs while junior outside hitter Sarah Collins (Grafton, MA) led the team with six kills and three aces. Sophomore setter Kelly Tanner (Wellesley, MA) led Salem State with 21 assists.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at home against Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday, Oct. 14 (7 p.m.).
