Danbury, Conn.-Junior outside hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) tallied a double-double, 13 kills and 13 digs, while freshman setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) notched a double-double of her own with 26 assists and 12 digs, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team fell, 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-17), to Little East foe Western Connecticut on Tuesday night.


The Anchorwomen (11-12, 3-3 LEC) were in a back and forth battle with Western (20-10, 3-3 LEC) in the opening set with the Colonials pulling away down the stretch for the 25-20 victory.


The second set saw the Anchorwomen open a 23-21 lead until a late 4-0 run by Western Connecticut salted the frame away and gave them the 2-0 lead in the match.


The third match saw a close stanza until the midway point when the hosts used a 10-5 run to finish out the sweep and take the set, 25-17.


Junior middle hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) finished with seven kills and two aces. White notched 26 assists and 12 digs, while sophomore libero Megan Armburg (Swansea, MA) added a team-high 13 digs.


Senior middle hitter Heather Williams (Kingston, NY) led Western with 12 kills. Sophomore setter Danielle Kaminsky (Southington, CT) handed out a match-high 31 assists for the Colonials. Senior outside hitter Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, CT) led the squad with 18 digs on the night.


With the loss, RIC is now tied with Western, who holds the tiebreaker, in the LEC standings going in to the last weekend of play. The Anchorwomen return to action when they host a tri-match on Nov. 1. They play host to conference foe Keene State in the early match before facing non-conference foe Eastern Nazarene in the finale.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Little East rival Keene State (noon) and Eastern Nazarene (4 p.m.) on Saturday, Nov. 1.
