Boston, Mass.-Sophomore first baseman Mary Sweeney (Portsmouth, RI) went 3-for-7 with a run scored, two doubles, a triple and three RBI as Rhode Island College split a doubleheader with UMass Boston in Little East Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon.

The Anchorwomen (3-12, 1-3 LEC) won game one, 9-8, in eight innings. The Beacons (4-12, 1-3 LEC) bounced back to win the nightcap, 5-2.

RIC wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning as they tacked on a pair of runs on a two-run double by Sweeney. They would then score two more in the fourth following an RBI double by senior third baseman Justina Thoma (Canterbury, CT) and an RBI single by junior catcher Tori Lussier (North Franklin, CT).

The bottom of the inning saw sophomore Kaitlyn Morse (Arlington, MA) reach on a single and would move over to second on a stolen base. Junior Hailey Dutton (Milton, MA) would then drive in her teammate on a single through the right side.

The Beacons would score two more runs to take the 6-4 lead, but a double by Lussier in the fifth, followed by Sweeney double, would knot the game at 6-6.

Extra innings saw Rhode Island College strike in the top half of the eighth to take a 9-6 lead over the Beacons. Sophomore left fielder Sarah Molin (Seymour, CT), freshman center fielder Sarah Nolan (Cranston, RI) and Junior pitcher Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) drove in the runs.

UMass Boston would start off the bottom of the inning with a walk, followed by an RBI double to center to cut the deficit to two, 9-7. A late RBI wouldn’t be enough as the Anchorwomen clinched the victory, 9-8.

Freshman pitcher Kaera Wyse (Danvers, MA) went eight complete innings, in which she struck out 10 in the loss. RIC sophomore pitcher Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI) earned her first win (1-1) of the year, coming on in relief in the fourth inning. She would strike out seven and allow just two runs on two hits.

Looking to rebound in the nightcap, UMass Boston got on the board in the bottom half of the second with Senior Lyndsey Capra (Lowell, MA) driving in the first run of the contest on a bunt single. The Beacons would then take a 2-0 lead after they took advantage of an error.

The Beacons would keep the Anchorwomen off the board in the third, but RIC would tie the game at 2-2 in the top half of the fourth. McCaughey brought in two runs with a single up the middle.

After a scoreless fourth, UMass Boston regained control of the lead in the fifth on an RBI double down the left line. The Beacons would then tack on their fourth run of the day on an RBI single by senior Kristen Morrison (North Reading, MA), before making it a three-run, 5-2, affair thanks to a slew of errors, which allowed Morrison to touch home. Strong pitching down the stretch for the Beacons allowed them to walk away with victory.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at Western Connecticut on Tuesday, April 14 (4:30 p.m.).
