Providence, R.I.-Wheaton allowed just one run over 11 innings of action to sweep Rhode Island College in non-conference action played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lyons (28-3) took game one, 12-1 (five innings), while topping the Anchorwomen (6-20), 10-0 (six innings), in game two.

The first game proved to be a pitchers duel early, with the two teams being held to a combined five hits through the first two frames. The Lyons were able to strike for three runs in the top of the third inning, following a sacrifice fly to center field and a two-out, two-run homer by sophomore first baseman Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, MA).

Wheaton wasted no time in the fourth to increase their advantage as senior pitcher Emily Berardi (Boston, MA) opened the inning with a solo shot. Following a two-run single to center field by sophomore third baseman Emily Bouthillette (Lincoln, RI), Fairbanks ripped a two-run single of her own to make the score 8-0. The Lyons were able to tack on three more runs in the frame to take an 11-0 lead.

Wheaton added another run in the top half of the fifth, before RIC senior first baseman Justina Thoma (Canterbury, CT) was able to knock in sophomore second baseman Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI) to put RIC on the board in the home half of the stanza. That would be all the offense the Lyons would allow on the day, taking game one in a convincing fashion, 12-1.

RIC sophomore pitcher Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI) went 3.0 innings, allowing six runs on six hits, while striking out two in the loss (2-6). Berardi pitched 3.0 innings of shutout ball, while striking out three in the victory (13-1).

Game two saw the Lyons score in every inning but the second to take another victory off the Anchorwomen. Wheaton struck in the top of the first with Bouthillette knocking in an RBI single to center field to put the visitors up, 1-0.

Following an error that allowed the third inning to continue, Bouthillette notched a two-out triple to drive in one run. Berardi followed that with a single to right, which allowed Bouthillette to score. Wheaton was able to add two more insurance runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Berardi notched her second homer of the day, a solo shot, to lead off the fifth, to put Wheaton comfortably ahead, 6-0. The sixth inning is where Wheaton sealed the victory as a three-run homer by Bouthillette gave the Lyons a 10-0 lead.

Wheaton senior pitcher Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, MA) pitched 5.0 innings of two-hit, shutout ball, while striking out 10 batters, to pick up the victory (7-0). Both Anchorwomen hits did not leave the infield and Christmas was perfect through the first three frames. DiScuillo went the distance for the Anchorwomen, allowing 10 runs, six of them earned, on 12 hits, while striking out three in the loss (2-5).

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference action at home against UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday, April 22 (4 p.m.).
