Cambridge, Mass.-Freshman pitcher Jake Murray (Middletown, RI) allowed three runs on six hits in 6.2 innings of action to lead the Rhode Island College baseball team in a 3-2 setback in non-conference at MIT on Wednesday afternoon.


The Anchormen (20-10) tallied one run in the sixth and one in the ninth, while the Engineers (22-10) plated one run in the second and two in the seventh.


MIT got on the board in the bottom of the second when senior centerfielder Reid Bishop (Cypress, TX) knocked a single into left field which advanced junior first baseman Nate Rodman (Corvallis, OR) to third. A fielding error on the Anchormen allowed Rodman to score, which put the hosts up 1-0.


Murray settled down and kept the MIT lead at 1-0 through five innings of play. RIC was able to knot the game at 1-1 when junior left fielder Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA) drove in freshman second baseman Shaun Vigeant (Coventry, RI) in the top of the sixth.

Murray got into trouble in the bottom of the seventh, getting two outs before loading the bases on a walk. Sophomore reliever Jake Roy (Seekonk, MA) came on in relief and the Engineers struck with a single by freshman third baseman Austin Filiere (Chandler, AZ), which drove in two runs. Following a hit batsmen, Roy was able to induce a fielder’s choice to end the seventh with the Engineers up 3-1.


Following a scoreless eighth and down to their final three outs, RIC struck in the top of the ninth when Foley blasted a solo homer to cut the lead down to one, 3-2. The next batter, senior right fielder Pat Rogers (Waterford, CT) walked and moved to second on a single by senior third baseman Tyler Santaniello (Cumberland, RI). With runners on first and second, freshman first baseman Frank Pettinato (Cranston, RI) moved both runners over with a ground-out to put the go-ahead runner on second with one down.


Following a walk to load the bases, but MIT junior righty Michael Wymer (Flower Mound, TX) was able to get a line-out and a strikeout to end the RIC comeback bid.


Murray picked up the loss (4-2) for the Anchormen. MIT senior reliever K.J. Parent (Knoxville, TN) went 2.0 innings, allowed no runs on just one hit in the victory (3-0). Wymer pitched one inning and allowed one run to earn the save (3).


Foley supplied the offense for the Anchormen, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.  Filiere supplied the offense for the Engineers, going 1-for-4 with two RBI in the victory.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will close out the regular season at Plymouth State on Friday, May 1 (noon).
