Weston, Mass.-Rhode Island College sophomore forward Komla Dogbey (Providence, RI) netted a hat trick and senior forward Jose Zarraga (Providence, RI) added a goal and an assist as the Anchormen defeated Regis, 5-2, in non-conference action on Saturday morning.


Dogbey put the Anchormen (2-2) on the board just 4:48 into the game when he beat the goalie in a 1-on-1 situation for his fourth marker of the season. Dogbey tacked on his second of the game in the 11th minute when he worked a give-and-go with Zarraga from the midfield position, corralling the cross and slipping it into the net to double the RIC advantage.

Zarraga made the score 3-0 just 1:27 later when he notched an unassisted tally, his first goal of the season. The RIC offense completed their first half outburst when freshman midfielder Dennis Vazquez (Providence, RI) found a loose ball and chipped it in to an open net for a 4-0 advantage.


Regis (3-2) junior goalkeeper Manny Santiago (Bristol, CT) made four saves in the half, while RIC junior Chris Moura (Rumford, RI) made three saves in the stanza.


Dogbey completed the hat trick in the 64th minute when he corralled a rebound and ripped it home following a feed from Vazquez. The Pride got on the board in the 67th minute when freshman midfielder Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, FL) found a loose ball and streaked in unopposed to cut the deficit to four, 5-1. Regis senior midfielder Renato Rosas (Fort Lauderdale, FL) tacked on a goal in the 89th minute, his second of the season, to close out the contest’s offensive output.

Moura (2-1) made three saves in the victory, while Santiago (3-2) made seven stops in the defeat. RIC held a 20-9 advantage in shots, while the Pride held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open a five-game homestand by hosting Bridgewater State on Wednesday, Sept. 16 (6 p.m.).
