Providence, R.I.-Senior outside hitter Kelsey Lace (Glendale, RI) recorded a match-high 12 kills to go along with seven digs, while freshman outside hitter Jillian Ward (Coventry, RI) put down nine winners, as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team fell to Wheaton, 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 27-25), at The Murray Center on Wednesday night.


The first set saw RIC (0-1) open a 6-3 lead following an attack error by the Lyons (1-0). Wheaton roared back, scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 10-7 lead following an attack error by the Anchorwomen.


The teams traded points, with a kill from Lace off a feed from junior libero Megan Armburg (Swansea, MA) to knot the score at 19-19. An attacking error by the Lyons cut the RIC deficit to three, 23-20, but a kill by senior outside hitter Arieanna Creighton (Brookline, MA) and a RIC attacking error sealed the victory for Wheaton in the first set, 25-20.

In the second set, the Lyons jumped out to a quick, 9-1, lead, capped by back-to-back aces from Wheaton senior middle hitter Kendall Jacobs (San Diego, CA). RIC cut the deficit down to six, 9-3, but Wheaton opened the lead to seven, 18-11, following a kill by freshman middle hitter Claire Cansler (Newhall, CA) on a feed from senior outside hitter Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, CA). The Lyons kept the pressure on to win the set, 25-13.


The third set saw the teams trade points, with a kill by RIC junior middle blocker Sierra Smith (Longmont, CO) off a feed from sophomore setter Abigayle White (Coventry, RI) to put the hosts up by one, 19-18. The see-saw battle continued, with an attacking error by the Lyons putting the Anchorwomen within one point of capturing the set, 25-24. The Lyons wouldn’t be denied, however, with senior outside hitter Taylor Matook (Exeter, RI) scoring two of the next three points to secure the 27-25 victory and the 3-0 sweep.


Lace led RIC with 12 kills and seven digs, while White finished with 22 assists and 12 digs. Creighton had the high mark in kills for the Lyons with nine and Wilson posted 19 assists.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Salve Regina for a tri-match with the Seahawks at St. Joseph’s (LI) on Saturday, Sept. 5 (10 a.m.).
