Newport, R.I.-Rhode Island College senior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) earned victories in both singles and doubles action to lead the women’s tennis squad to a 5-4 victory over intra-state rival Salve Regina on Thursday night.


Salve Regina (0-2) junior Emma Gruber (New Canaan, CT) and senior Kasey Walther (Natick, MA) topped the Anchorwomen (1-1) duo of junior Julie Reddy (Smithfield, RI) and sophomore Dayna Reilly (Swansea, MA), 8-6, at No. 1 doubles.


No. 2 doubles saw Campanella and partner junior Jorgie Martin (Greenville, RI) top junior Taylor Amendola (Westbrook, CT) and freshman Caroline Rodman (Southington, CT), 8-2.

The Seahawks took the lead going in to singles competition as their sophomore duo of Courtney Bailey (No. Dartmouth, MA) and Cristina Marsocci (North Scituate, RI) bested RIC senior Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI) and sophomore Laura Nastasi (Smithville, NJ), 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.


No. 1 singles saw Reilly best Walther (6-0, 6-0). Campanella captured her second victory of the day as she topped Gruber (6-0, 7-5) at No. 2 singles. No 4 singles saw Cannata top Bailey (6-3, 6-0), while Salve freshman Abigail Packard (Dudley, MA) bested Nastasi (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 5 flight. No. 6 singles saw Seahawk senior Julie Grant (Warwick, RI) defeat Martin (7-6 (7-3), 6-4).

No. 3 singles proved to be the deciding match, going well into the night. In the match, Reddy topped Rodman, 6-2, before Rodman rallied to take the second set, 6-3. Following a move to a different court that had lighting, Reddy bested Rodman in the deciding set to clinch the victory for the Anchorwomen, 6-4. (6-2, 3-6, 6-4).


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Wentworth on Saturday, Sept. 5 (11 a.m.).
