Providence, R.I.-Sophomore setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) notched 30 assists and senior outside hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) registered six kills and a .286 hitting percentage as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team suffered a 3-1 setback (25-14, 25-19, 18-25, 25-16) against Clark at The Murray Center on Tuesday night.


The first set saw the Cougars (4-0) best the Anchorwomen (1-3), 25-14, bolstered in part to a combined six kills from junior middle blocker Courtney Pharr (Seattle, WA) and sophomore outside hitter Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico). Clark hit .172 during the set while the Anchorwomen struggled, recording five kills compared to eight errors.


The second set saw a tightly contested battle until late in the frame when Clark pulled away at the end for a 25-19 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Lace (Glendale, RI), who registered five kills in the set, led RIC in the stanza. Ramos and senior outside hitter Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, NM) each recorded five kills in the frame for the visitors.

The third set saw the Anchorwomen close the gap, winning the frame, 25-18, and cutting the Clark set lead down to one, 2-1. While resting starting setter, freshman Rachel Webb (Celina, TX), Clark was unable to stop the momentum of the Anchorwomen who were buoyed by a .200 hitting percentage (11-5-30). Malboeuf led the way for RIC, registering four kills on five attempts in the frame.


Webb and the Cougars would rebound in the fourth set, clinching the match with a 25-16 victory in the fourth stanza. Clark raced out to an early advantage that it never relinquished as the Cougars cruised to victory.


The Anchorwomen were led by Lace’s 17 kills to go along with nine digs. White chipped in with 30 assists and nine digs, while freshman outside hitter Jillian Ward (Coventry, RI) notched four kills to go along with a team-best 14 digs.


Ramos led the Clark offense with 15 kills and nine digs, while Webb handed out a match-best 32 assists and recorded 15 digs, which was also a match-high. Freshman right side hitter Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) was stellar for the Cougars, posting 10 kills and no errors for a .476 hitting percentage.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Wesleyan for a tri-match with the Cardinals and Worcester on Saturday, Sept. 12 (10 a.m.).
