HALEY MAKES 12 SAVES IN, 4-0, LOSS TO BEARS

Bridgewater, Mass.-Bridgewater State senior midfielder Marissa Yowell (Ashland, MA) scored back-to-back goals in the second half as the host Bears topped the Rhode Island College womenís soccer team, 4-0, on Wednesday night.

 

The Bears (2-3) struck in the 28th minute when senior defender Allison LeBel (Millis, MA) sent a lead pass from the 50-yard line to freshman midfielder Caitlin Rowley (Lakeville, MA) who ripped a shot into the right-hand side of the net for the 1-0 lead.

 

BSU would strike again when a loose ball in the RIC (1-4) box found the foot of freshman midfielder Kellsie Mitchell (Bristol, RI) who sent it into the net for the 2-0 advantage going into the break.

 

RIC freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Haley (Hope, RI) made six saves in the half, while BSU sophomore goalkeeper Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, MA) stopped three in the stanza.

Yowell extended the Bearsí lead just 4:45 into the second frame when she took a corner from junior midfielder Allyson Pontes (Dartmouth, MA) and slid it home. She would tally her second of the half in the 59th minute when she found a rebound in the box and blasted it in for the 4-0 lead.

 

Haley (1-4) finished with 12 saves in the defeat with DeSousa (2-3) earning the shutout victory with six stops of her own.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open Little East Conference play at UMass Boston on Saturday, Sept. 19 (4 p.m.).
