BEACONS SPOIL SENIOR DAY
FOR ANCHORWOMEN

Providence, R.I.—Senior hitter Bri Sousa (Swansea, MA) hit .750 and knocked down 11 kills as UMass Boston defeated Rhode Island College, 3-0, in Little East Conference women’s volleyball action played at The Murray Center on Wednesday evening.

 

UMB (7-12, 4-1 LEC) also got a strong performance from junior hitter Julia Murphy (Canton, MA) who registered 11 kills and hit .370 for the match. Junior setter Pepper Baker (Tallahassee, FL) and freshman setter Rachel Maslach (Berlin Center, OH) combined for 33 assists with 18 and 15, respectively. Freshman defensive specialist Emily Steinberg (Moorpark, CA) recorded 12 digs.

 

 

 

The Beacons took the first set, 25-15, but the Anchorwomen (16-9, 2-3 LEC) jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the middle frame, eventually building a 20-11, advantage. After a UMB timeout, the visitors outscored RIC, 15-3, to completely control the momentum. UMass Boston cruised to a 25-16 win in the third stanza to secure the victory.

 

It was Senior Day for the Anchorwomen, who honored outside hitter Kelsey Lace (Glendale, RI), outside hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) and right side hitter Morgan Stewart (Willington, CT), along with their families, prior to the contest.

 

Malboeuf and Lace led RIC offensively with eight and six kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) handed out 21 assists. Freshman outside hitter Jillian Ward (Coventry, RI) and junior libero Megan Armburg (Swansea, MA) each registered 11 digs.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Coast Guard on Saturday, Oct. 24 (2 p.m.).
