Willimantic, Conn.óEastern Connecticut sophomore forward Xavier Doran (Hebron, CT) scored the game-winning goal in the 109th minute as the Warriors topped the Anchormen, 1-0, in Little East Conference menís soccer action on Saturday afternoon.


The two squads exchanged chances early, with RIC (9-5, 4-2 LEC) testing ECSU (13-2-1, 5-0-1 LEC) freshman goalkeeper Ryan Murphy (Cromwell, CT) just two minutes into the game. Doran challenged RIC junior keeper Chris Moura (Rumford, RI) in the 19th minute, but he too kept the game scoreless. Both teams tightened up their defensive efforts, keeping the game, 0-0, going into the half.


Moura turned aside two shots in the half and Murphy stopped three in the frame. RIC held a 6-3 edge in shots and a slim, 1-0, advantage in corner kicks.


The teams traded opportunities throughout the second half, but neither could break through the oppositionís defense, sending the battle for the top spot in the LEC into extra time. RIC held the 1-0 advantage in shots in the first overtime, but wasnít able to capitalize, setting the stage for Doranís heroics in second extra period.

RIC nearly scored in the 105th minute when freshman midfielder Dennis Vazquez (Providence, RI) ripped a shot on net, but Murphy denied him. Doran notched the game-winner in the 109th minute when he took a feed from junior forward Tyler Jones (Vernon, CT) and snapped it into the back for his 10th goal of the season.


Moura (9-4) stopped three shots in the loss. Murphy (13-2-1) stopped five in the shutout victory. RIC held a commanding, 15-5, advantage in shots with both teams recording two corner kicks in the game.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Johnson & Wales on Tuesday, Oct. 27 (4 p.m.).
