ANCHORWOMEN TAKE TWO FROM HAWKS

Providence, R.I.--Sophomore second baseman Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) went 4-for-8 with three runs scored, two doubles and six RBI as Rhode Island College swept a doubleheader from Roger Williams on Saturday afternoon at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

 

 Freshman shortstop Kelsey Burgess (North Providence, RI) also had a strong day offensively, going 4-for-7 with four runs scored, one double, two triples and an RBI. 

 

 Senior Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) and junior Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI) picked up the wins in the pitching circle.

 

 The Anchorwomen battled back from a 5-1 deficit in the first game to win, 8-5. A four-run fourth tied the game, which was keyed by RBI singles by freshman catcher Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, RI) and Burgess, to go along with a two-run double by junior left fielder Sarah Molin (Seymour, CT).

The hosts scored three times in the bottom of the sixth, paced by a Venturini RBI single and an RBI double by sophomore first baseman Chelsea Schott (Meriden, CT). The Anchorwomen also scored on an error. McCaughey came on in relief of freshman starter Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) and hurled five innings, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out three to earn her third win (3-0) of the year.

 

Roger Williams was led by sophomore shortstop Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, RI) who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Junior catcher Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, RI) knocked in three. Senior reliever Meghan Maliga (Suffield, CT) suffered the loss (2-5).

 

The Hawks built a 4-0 lead through five innings in the nightcap, paced by three runs in the fifth. Junior second baseman Meridith Moise (North Reading, MA) had an RBI single and classmate designated player Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, NJ) plated two with a double in the stanza.

 

 RIC ripped off eight runs in the home half of the sixth to come from behind and win, 8-4. Venturini keyed the explosion with an RBI double early in the frame and then with a bases loaded clearing double at the end.

 Junior pitcher Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI) picked up the win in relief of Gough, allowing just two hits and no runs in 2.1 innings of work. Venturini went 2-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI. RWU freshman reliever Hailey Prechtel (Glenmont, NY) took the loss (0-1). Moise went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the loss.

 

 Ledbetter paced the visitor's attack on the day, going 5-for-8 with two runs scored. Moise went 4-for-8 with three runs scored and an RBI.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Husson for two games on Saturday, March 26 (1 p.m.).
