GAMBARDELLA PICKS UP LONE WIN IN, 8-1, SETBACK TO UMASS DARTMOUTH

Providence, R.I.-Freshman Matthew Gambardella (West Warwick, RI) picked up a three-set win at No. 6 singles as Rhode Island College lost, 8-1, to UMass Dartmouth in Little East Conference action played at the RIC Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon.

 

UMD (3-7, 2-1 LEC) senior Dan Chouinard (Westport, MA) and senior Andrew Burdick (Dartmouth, MA) bested RIC (2-10, 0-3 LEC) junior Brett Taggart (North Kingstown, RI) and sophomore Lee Tiberi (Smithfield, RI), 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.

 

Corsair junior Corey Rafter (Franklin, MA) and freshman Ian Patriarca (Springfield, MA) defeated RIC freshman Alan Esposito (Clinton, CT) and Gambardella 8-3, at No. 2 doubles.

Senior Summer Forest-Bulley (Turners Falls, MA) and freshman Anthony Joseph (Fairhaven, MA) downed freshman Chandler Scott (Ashaway, RI) and junior Cory Duquette (Warwick, RI), 8-4, at third doubles to complete the sweep for the visitors.

 

Chouinard defeated Taggart (6-2, 6-0) at No. 1 singles and Rafter downed Tiberi (7-5, 6-3) at No. 2 singles.

 

Patriarca edged Esposito (7-6, 7-6) at No. 3 singles and Joseph downed Scott (7-5, 6-1) at fourth singles.

 

Duquette took the middle set before falling to UMD senior Tony Xie (Beijing, China) (6-0, 3-6, 6-1) at No. 5 singles.

 

Gambardella bested UMD sophomore Zach Pavo (Somerset, MA) (6-0, 6-7, 10-4) to salvage a point for the Anchormen at No. 6 singles.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference action at Southern Maine on Saturday, April 23 (1 p.m.).
