Providence, R.I.-Rhode Island College junior center fielder Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI) went 4-for-7 with four runs scored, four hits, three doubles and two RBI as the Anchorwomen swept Southern Maine (5-3, 12-11) at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.


RIC (10-8, 2-2) freshman pitcher Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) earned both victories (5-2), allowing five runs on 13 hits, to go along with four strikeouts in 12.2 innings of work. Junior second baseman Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI) went 3-for-7 with a run scored, three RBI and a triple, while sophomore shortstop Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) scored three runs on the day.


The Anchorwomen took a 2-0 lead through the first two innings of the opener as freshman catcher Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, RI) scored on a throwing error after a steal in the first and Gough came across on a wild pitch in the second.

RIC built a 5-0 lead with a three-run third frame, which was highlighted by a Duvall RBI a double and a run scored when she alertly broke for home after a dropped third strike later in the inning.


Southern Maine (14-6, 1-3 LEC) scored three in the fifth inning a junior outfielder Samantha Cross (South Berwick, ME) got the rally started with an RBI triple. Sophomore second baseman Taylor Lux (Arundel, ME) smacked an RBI single and sophomore center fielder Amber Kelly (Berwick, ME) brought in another with an RBI fielder’s choice.


Gough kept the Huskies off the board in the sixth and seventh to secure the win, allowing three runs on seven hits in the complete game effort. USM freshman pitcher Sammi Goode (Bucksport, ME) took the loss (3-3), allowing just two earned runs on two hits before giving way to sophomore Katelyn Tucker (Gray, ME). Tucker allowed just one hit and struck out two in four innings of relief.


Southern Maine built a 9-0 advantage through the first two innings of the nightcap, which forced RIC to bring Gough back in during the second inning. She slammed the door on the visitors, allowing just two runs on six hits over 5.2 innings as the hosts mounted a comeback.

The Anchorwomen scored five runs in the third, paced by a two-run single by junior third baseman Mary Sweeney (Portsmouth, RI), to cut their deficit down to three runs, 9-6.


In the fourth, both Simmons and Sweeney knocked in runs to pull the Anchorwomen within a run, 9-8. USM junior designated player Danni Humphrey (Walnut Creek, CA) gave the Huskies a 10-8 lead in the sixth with an RBI single, but RIC answered back in the home half of the frame with a two-run single from Simmons to tied the game, 10-10.


A sacrifice fly by Lux in the top of the seventh gave the visitors an 11-10 lead, but the Anchorwomen got an RBI fielder’s choice from Venturini and a walk-off bloop single by Duvall to plate junior left fielder Sarah Molin (Seymour, CT) to take the win.


Tucker took the loss (1-2), allowing two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Kelly gave up 10 runs on 12 hits in five innings of work. Duvall went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and the game-winning RBI.


USM freshman outfielder Brooke Cross (Saco, ME) went 4-for-6 with three runs scored, a double, a triple and three RBI on the day.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play with a doubleheader at UMass Boston on Saturday, April 16 (1 p.m.).
