Norton, Mass.-Rhode Island College sophomore second baseman Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) knocked in three RBI on the day as the softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Wheaton on Sunday afternoon.


Wheaton jumped out early in game one, scoring six runs in the bottom half of the second inning and never looked back as they took the 11-3 victory. The inning was keyed by a two-RBI double from senior second baseman Erin Deneen (South Yarmouth, MA).


RIC scored three in the top of the next stanza, highlighted by a solo home run by sophomore catcher Jacqueline Gauthier (Seekonk, MA), but Wheaton responded in the home half of the inning by scoring three runs of its own to make the score 9-3.

The Lyons struck for two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game early, 11-3, via the eight-run rule.


RIC junior pitcher Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI) allowed six runs on three hits in the loss (2-4). Wheaton junior Danielle Cimino (Cumberland, ME) went 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out a pair in the victory (6-5).


The Anchorwomen raced out to an early, 4-1, lead after two innings to open game two, with Venturini recording an RBI in each of the innings. The Lyons knotted the game at four apiece in the bottom of the third when senior designated player Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, IL) smacked a three-run homer.


RIC scored three more runs in the top of the fourth inning, with Venturini registering an RBI and a run scored to stake the Anchorwomen to a 7-4 lead. The Lyons roared back in the bottom half of the inning, however, scoring four runs to take an 8-7 lead and win the contest.


RIC freshman pitcher Erica Fleming (Sagamore Beach, MA) went 3.0 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in the loss (0-1). Wheaton freshman Shelbi Wilson (Peabody, MA) pitched 4.0 innings in relief, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out a pair in the win (2-1).


In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen will resume Little East Conference action at home against UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, April 19 (5 p.m.).
