PANTHERS SWEEP ANCHORWOMEN

Providence, R.I.—Plymouth State senior pitcher Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, NH) picked up a win and a save as the Panthers swept Rhode Island College 6-5, 3-0, in Little East Conference action played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

PSU senior catcher Julia Royer (Pawcatuck, CT) led the way offensively, going 4-for-8 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore right fielder Nina Murray (Saugus, MA) went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and a double.

In game one, Plymouth State (11-21, 3-7 LEC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior second baseman Emma Rhodes (Rochester, NH). The hosts (12-16, 3-7 LEC) bounced back with two runs in the home half of the frame as sophomore catcher Jackie Gauthier (Seekonk, MA) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and junior right fielder Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI) contributed an RBI single.

PSU evened the game in the third when junior first baseman Katie Kennard (Concord, NH) scored on an error. RIC went on top, 3-2, in the fourth as Gauthier doubled and was brought home by another DiScuillo RBI single.

 Sophomore second baseman Nicole Venturini

The Panthers score twice in the fifth, paced by a two-run double by freshman left fielder Lindsey Hall (Midlothian, VA), to jump back on top, 4-3. PSU added two more in the sixth as Kennard and Royer registered an RBI single and double, respectively.

RIC trimmed its deficit down to a pair of runs, 6-4, when freshman shortstop Kelsey Burgess (North Providence, RI) picked up an RBI single in the sixth. PSU left runners on second and third with one out in the top of the seventh, but were unable to get another insurance run across.

RIC sophomore second baseman Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple and scored on an error. The Anchorwomen loaded the bases with one out but Roberts got a game-ending ground ball double play to secure the win.

Hall went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of doubles for the visitors. DiScuillo went 3-for-4 with a run scored, two RBI and a double.

Sophomore pitcher Allison Moylan (Methuen, MA) earned the win (2-3), allowing five runs on 10 hits in six innings of work. Roberts earned the save (2). RIC senior starter Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) took the loss (5-4), allowing four runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Plymouth State took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap in the top of third when Kennard doubled and was later brought home on sophomore designated player Abrie Davis’ (Amherst, NH) RBI single.

The Panthers scored two in the top of the sixth on a Royer two-run double to left field. That would be all Roberts would need as she allowed just five hits and struck out four in a complete game win (4-8).

Kennard went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double, while Royer went 2-for-4 with two RBI. RIC freshman starter Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) took the loss (5-6), allowing one run on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Venturini went 4-for-7 with two runs scored and a triple for the Anchorwomen on the day.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference action at Western Connecticut on Tuesday, April 26 (5 p.m.).
