Danbury, Conn.--Western Connecticut combined for 17 hits in two games to complete a crucial Little East Conference softball doubleheader sweep over Rhode Island College at Westside Field on Wednesday night.


The Colonials (18-16, 7-5 LEC) took game one by a score of 6-1, before topping the Anchorwomen (12-18, 3-9 LEC) 8-0 (5 innings) in the nightcap.


In the opener, the Anchorwomen jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning when sophomore second baseman Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) reached on a fielder’s choice to right field that scored freshman right fielder Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, RI).


The Colonials responded in the bottom half of the first inning with a double by senior catcher Michaela Roche (Bristol, CT), which drove in a pair of runs to give the hosts the 2-1 advantage following the first inning. Western upped its lead in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore first baseman Kayla Nowak (North Branford, CT) ripped a two-run homer to put the hosts up by three, 4-1.

Western was able to tack on another pair of runs on the bottom half of the fourth with a solo home run by senior third baseman Maegan Rodriguez (East Haven, CT) and an RBI single by sophomore right fielder Jenna Gaudioso (East Haven, CT) producing the runs.


RIC freshman pitcher Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) went 3.0 innings, allowing six runs (four earned), on seven hits in the loss (5-7). Western senior pitcher Alle Sabith (Meriden, CT) pitched a complete game, allowing just one run, while scattering four hits and striking out six in the victory (7-6).


Western wasted no time getting on the board in game two as Roche launched a two-run homer to put the Colonials up, 2-0, after one. A pair of sacrifice bunts put the Colonials up 4-0 in the bottom of the second with two outs before senior shortstop Erin Weber (Rocky Hill, CT) smacked a solo homer to make the score 5-0 after two innings.


Following a scoreless third inning by both squads, Western was able to notch two runs in the home half of the fourth inning, with Gaudioso and junior left fielder Alexandra LaFemina (East Haddam, CT) picking up one RBI apiece in the stanza. Western senior pitcher Emily Cintorino (Bristol, CT) was able to shut the door in the top of the fifth, allowing only one hit in the inning before inducing a ground out to end the game early and complete the sweep.


RIC senior pitcher Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) pitched 1.0 innings, allowing two runs in the loss (5-5) before giving way to the bullpen. Cintorino pitched all five innings for the Colonials, hurling a six-hit shutout and striking out five batters in the victory (9-9).


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference action at home against Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, April 30 (1 p.m.).
