Providence, R.I.-Eastern Connecticut senior shortstop Alyssa Hancock (Waterford, CT) went 4-for-5 with seven runs scored, three walks, a double, one triple and four stolen bases as the Warriors swept Rhode Island College (13-0, 4-2) in a Little East Conference doubleheader played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Eastern Connecticut (15-23, 6-8 LEC) secured a spot in the upcoming 2016 Little East Conference Softball Tournament with the victories. RIC (12-20, 3-11 LEC) sees its season come to an end.

The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Hancock tripled off the left center field wall to lead off the game. Junior right fielder Danielle Robillard (Swansea, MA) executed a perfect sacrifice bunt back to the pitching circle to bring in Hancock. Senior third baseman Samantha Rentz (Griswold, CT) walked, moved over to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a ground out and came across on junior second baseman Gina Georgetti’s (Milford, CT) RBI single.

Senior Katelyn McCaughey and her parents were recognized
in between games as part of Senior Day.

Hancock got the offense going in the third by leading off with a walk, stealing second and then being sacrificed to third. Rentz came through with an RBI single and then later scored on an RBI single by Georgetti to give the visitors a 4-0 advantage.

In the fourth, Eastern junior center fielder Samantha Bardos (Norwalk, CT) led off with a double to left field and scored on an RBI single by Hancock. Hancock stole second and then scored on a throwing error to increase the Warriors advantage to, 6-0.

The Warriors exploded in the top of the fifth to end the game early, plating seven runs. Senior catcher Taylor Smyth (Meriden, CT) got the ball rolling with an RBI single and later scored on a Bardos RBI double. Sophomore pinch hitter Jessica Seymour (Barkhamsted, CT) and Georgetti came through RBI singles and junior first baseman Summer Cipriani (North Stonington, CT) capped the frame with a two-run single.

Eastern junior pitcher Samantha Valentine (Ridge, NY) picked up the win (6-10), allowing just two hits in a complete game effort. RIC senior pitcher Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) took the loss (5-6), allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits in 2.2 innings of work.

The Warriors once again scored first in the second baseman as Hancock singled, stole second and later scored on senior designated player Emily Komornik’s (Shelton, CT) RBI single.

Eastern took a 2-0 lead in the third as Hancock led off with a walk, stole second with one away and trotted home on a Rentz sacrifice fly. An RBI ground out by freshman right fielder Kayla Santos (Peabody, MA) in the fourth gave the visitors a 3-0 advantage. Rentz brought in Hancock with an RBI ground out in the fifth to make it 4-0.

The Anchorwomen scored their first runs of the day in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore first baseman Chelsea Schott (Meriden, CT) came up with a one-out, two-run single to pull the hosts within two, 4-2, but that would be as close as RIC would come.

Cipriani picked up the win (7-8), allowing two runs on five hits and striking out two in 5.1 innings of work. McCaughey took the loss (5-7), allowing four runs on six hits in a complete game effort.

Georgetti went 4-for-7 with three RBI and a run scored to help the Warriors offense.
