Keene, N.H.-Rhode Island College junior guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) poured in a game-high 24 points, which included a 10-of-12 mark from the free throw line, as the Anchorwomen fell to Keene State, 68-48, in Little East Conference women’s basketball action played at Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.


The first quarter saw a back-and-forth battle, with RIC (3-10, 1-4 LEC) taking an 11-6 advantage following a layup by senior forward Devin Hill (Danielson, CT) with 5:07 left in the frame. The Owls (14-1, 4-1 LEC) rebounded, knotting the game at 11-11 on a made free throw by junior forward Amanda Petrow (Methuen, MA) with 3:14 left in the stanza. The teams would trade buckets to end the first 12 minutes tied, 14-14.


The Owls took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Anchorwomen, 13-6, in the frame. RIC took a quick, 19-16, lead 3:41 into the quarter off a pair of made free throws by Moore. Keene bounced back and outscored the Anchorwomen, 11-1, over the remainder of the stanza to take a convincing, 27-20, lead heading into the half.


RIC was held to 20.8 percent (5-for-24) shooting from the floor and shot a scorching 44.4 percent (4-for-9) from three-point range. The Owls shot 31.3 percent (10-for-32) from the field, while being held to 20.0 percent (2-for-10) from downtown.

The Anchorwomen opened the third quarter quickly, trimming the deficit down to five, 32-27, following a trey by junior guard Meghan Reall (Smithfield, RI) with 6:06 left in the frame. The Owls responded and ballooned their lead to 14, 43-29, after a layup by senior forward Ryanne Williams (Norwell, MA) with 3:34 left in the quarter. The Owls continued the offensive outburst, with a pair of free throws by Williams with 26 seconds left in the third giving Keene a 52-36 advantage heading into the final quarter.


The Owls continued their offensive outburst in the opening moments of the fourth quarter and extended their advantage to 25 points, 66-41, following a layup by junior guard Stephanie D’Annolfo (Tyngsborough, MA) with 5:27 left in the game. Keene grew the lead to as large as 27 before finishing with a 20-point victory.


RIC shot 27.1 percent (13-for-48) from the field, 33.3 percent (7-for-21) from three-point range and 83.3 percent (15-for-18) from the free throw line. Moore notched 24 points, five rebounds and two steals to set the pace. Hill dropped in 12 points.


The Owls shot 38.7 percent (24-for-62) from the floor, 29.2 percent (7-for-24) from downtown and 72.2 percent (13-for-18) from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Sandi Purcell (Hudson, NH) led the way offensively for the hosts, scoring 15 points in the victory. D’Annolfo joined her in double figures, scoring 11 points to go along with three assists.  


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference action at home against UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday, Jan. 20 (5:30 p.m.).
