Danbury, Conn.-Rhode Island College senior forward Devin Hill (Danielson, CT) registered 19 points to go along with six rebounds as the women’s basketball team fell to Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut, 78-64, on Wednesday night.


The Colonials (12-6, 6-2 LEC) opened a 14-4 lead in the first 5:48 of the first quarter following a made bucket by sophomore forward Molly Ronan (Orange, CT). The Anchorwomen (4-12, 2-6 LEC) trimmed the deficit back down to eight, 14-6, following a layup by Hill, but a late jumper by the Colonials sent the game into the second quarter with Western up by 10, 16-6.


RIC opened the second quarter with a burst, cutting the deficit down to five, 16-11, following a made layup by sophomore forward Rybecca Gonzalez (Pawtucket, RI) with 8:05 left in the half. RIC trimmed the lead down to four, 21-17, but the Western offense was able to extend the lead to 10 entering the half, 37-27, after a made layup by junior forward Alecia Dulaire (Bloomfield, CT).

RIC shot 28.1 percent (9-for-32) from the field over the first 20 minutes, with the Colonials shooting 42.9 percent (12-for-28) as a team.


Western opened the second half quickly, with a made layup by Dulaire putting Western up by 15, 44-29, with 7:59 left in the quarter. A pair of free throws by Gonzalez cut the Western lead down to 13, 57-44, but  a late three-pointer by sophomore guard Kaitlyn LaBonte (South Windsor, CT) sent Western into the fourth quarter up 16, 60-44. 


The Anchorwomen were able to cut the deficit back down to 10 points, 66-56, but Western was able to pull away down the stretch, hitting several clutch free throws to secure the 14-point 78-64 victory in a key Little East Conference battle.


RIC shot 34.4 percent (21-for-61) from the field, 33.3 percent (4-for-12) from three-point range and 72.0 percent (18-for-25) from the charity stripe. Hill led the way with 19 points and six rebounds, while Gonzalez chipped 16 points and six boards of her own.


Western shot 41.1 percent (23-for-56) from the field, 40.0 percent (8-for-20) from downtown and 82.8 percent (24-for-29) from the free throw line. LaBonte led all scorers with 28 points, while also contributing in five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal. Senior guard Kerri Stolle (Warren, CT) dished out a game-best 11 assists to go along with seven points and three rebounds.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at home against Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Jan. 30 (1 p.m.).
