Providence, R.I.-The match between intra-city rivals came down to the final buzzer as the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats were able to topple the Rhode Island College Anchormen, 23-16, in New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) action held at The Recreation Center on Friday night.

The Wildcats jumped out to the early, 5-0, lead when sophomore 125 lbs. Bobby Jordan (Woodbridge, NJ) earned a 20-5 technical victory in the first match of the night. RIC responded, with a pin by senior 141 lbs. Shawn Giblin (Cranston, RI) putting the Anchormen ahead, 9-5, following three matches.

JWU senior 149 lbs. Joey Gaccione (Highpoint, NJ) put the Wildcats back on top with a 9-3 decision before the match of the night took place. RIC senior Ricondo Cole (Cranston, RI), with the standing room only crowd at his back, escaped a spirited effort from sophomore Brandon Flemming (Marshfield, MA) to put RIC back on top, 10-8, with a 7-4 victory at 165 lbs.
