Bristol, R.I.-The Rhode Island College menís soccer team opened the 2016 campaign with a 2-0 setback vs. Clark at the Squad Locker Invitational, hosted by Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon.


The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first half with the game scoreless heading into halftime. Clark (1-0) held the 7-3 advantage in shots for the stanza and had the lone corner kick for the half.


Rhode Island College (0-1) controlled play early in the second half and outshot Clark 6-3 over the first 15 minutes. The Anchormen were whistled for a foul in the 69th minute, however, and the Cougars' Zack Blais converted the ensuing penalty kick to put Clark up 1-0.

Clark added an insurance goal in the 74th minute when Charlie Lane sent a pass to the left corner of the field where Jonathan Guilherme then sent a centering pass to Blais who connected on a shot to the back of the next give the Cougars the two goal advantage. 


RIC had several scoring chances in the final 10 minutes of action, which included a shot from senior midfielder Dan Monteiro (Pawtucket, R.I.) that hit the crossbar. RIC held the 18-16 advantage in shots for the contest. 


 RIC senior goalkeeper Chris Moura (Rumford, RI) notched 10 saves in the loss, while Alistair Richardson tallied five stops to pick up the win for Clark.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will return to Roger Williams to battle No 14 Montclair State on Sunday, Sept. 4 (11:00 a.m.).
