Providence, R.I.-Senior Jorgie Martin (Greenville, RI) won at No. 5 singles and paired with sophomore Laura Nastasi (Smithville, NJ) for a win at No. 3 doubles as Rhode Island College edged Suffolk, 5-4, in collegiate women’s tennis action played at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols on Tuesday evening.


RIC (2-0) had the early lead after doubles action as the team gained a 2-1 advantage when the duo of sophomore Katherine Braganca (Pawtucket, RI) and junior Isabella Romeo (Greenville, RI) posted an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Martin and Nastasi battled to a hard fought, 9-7, win at No. 3 doubles.

In the singles action, Nastasi posted a (6-1, 6-4) win at the No. 3 spot for her second victory on the day, while Braganca also notched her second win with a (6-1, 6-3) victory at the fourth spot. Martin rounded out the RIC players with two victories as her (6-4, 7-5) win at No. 5 singles helped the Anchorwomen even the singles matches at three apiece and secured the 5-4 victory.


Junior Valentina Medina (San Andres, Columbia) was the lone Suffolk (0-1) player with two wins on the day, posting a (7-6, 6-1) decision at No. 2 singles, while teaming with junior Isabel Rathlev (Wellesley, MA) for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Wentworth on Thursday, Sept. 8 (4 p.m.).
