Hartford, Conn.--The Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team split a non-conference tri-match with WPI and host Trinity on Saturday afternoon. The Anchorwomen picked up a 3-1 (25-16, 17-25, 25-23, 26-24) win over WPI before dropping a hard fought, 3-2 (25-15, 16-25, 19-25, 25-20, 14-16), decision against host Trinity.


In the win over WPI (17-6), sophomore outside hitter Jillian Ward (Coventry, RI) led the way for RIC (9-10) as she notched a double-double with 20 kills and 20 digs, while junior outside hitter Courtney Lambrese (Cranston, RI) and sophomore middle blocker Courtney Derefaka (West Warwick, RI) each had eight kills.


Lambrese added 10 kills, while Derefaka notched four blocks in the match. Junior setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) also had a double-double for RIC with 35 set assists and 12 digs and senior libero Megan Armburg (Swansea, MA) added a team-best 25 digs in the win for the Anchorwomen.

WPI was paced by senior outside hitter Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA) with 15 kills, four digs and two blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) had a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs in the setback.


Lambrese paced RIC in the match against Trinity (8-10) with a double-double, recording 11 kills and 11 digs, while Ward added nine kills, 20 digs and five blocks.  White notched 17 assists and 20 digs and Armburg tallied 27 digs in the setback. 


Leading the way for the Bantams was freshman outside hitter Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, IL) with 11 kills and 23 digs, while sophomore right side hitter Hanna Engstrom (Hopkinton, MA) notched 11 kills with two digs for Trinity. Senior setter Randi Whitman (Weymouth, MA) had a match-best 27 assists and 33 digs in the victory.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at UMass Boston on Tuesday, Oct. 18 (6 p.m.).
