Providence, R.I.-Rhode Island College senior Yemi Matthew (Providence, RI) was named the Little East Conference Menís Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, while senior Chris Moura (Rumford, RI) was tabbed the LEC Menís Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, as part of a 2-0 week for the club.


Matthew and Moura helped the Anchormen to a perfect 2-0 record on the week, defeating intra-city rival Johnson & Wales, 1-0, on Oct. 26, before wrapping up the regular season with a 3-0 win against Eastern Connecticut on Oct. 29. The win over Eastern Connecticut secured a share of the first LEC Regular Season Championship in program history.

In the win over Johnson & Wales, Matthew, a back, assisted on the gameís lone goal and anchored the RIC defense that allowed just 16 shots in the contest. Moura tallied eight saves to notch his fifth shutout of the season in the win.


On Saturday in the regular season finale against Eastern Connecticut, Matthew was again outstanding defensively and helped RIC hold the visiting Warriors to just 13 shots in the contest. Moura picked up his sixth shutout of the season against ECSU, posting four saves in the win for the Anchormen.

For the season, Matthew has played in 15 games, starting all of them. He has one assist for one point. Moura is 13-3-1 with a 1.08 goals against average and a .854 save percentage to go along with six shutouts on the season.


Head Coach John Melloís team is 14-3-1 overall and 5-1-1 (first place tie) in the Little East Conference. RIC is the No. 2 seed in the four-team Little East Tournament and will host third-seeded Western Connecticut on Wednesday, Nov. 2 (6 p.m.) in the semifinals.
