Mansfield, Conn.Junior second baseman Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) went 4-for-5 with a run scored, a triple, three RBI and a pair of walks, while sophomore pitcher Erica Fleming (Sagamore Beach, MA) hurled a game two victory, as Rhode Island College split a doubleheader with Eastern Connecticut in Little East Conference softball action played at Eastern Stadium on Sunday afternoon.


RIC (6-6, 1-1 LEC) took a 2-0 lead in game one, scoring two runs in the top of the first as Venturini and senior center fielder Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI) contributed an RBI triple and single, respectively.


A Venturini RBI walk with the bases loaded in the second gave RIC a three-run, 3-0, advantage, but the hosts pulled within one with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame.

Duvall homered and sophomore catcher Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, RI) pitched in with an RBI single in the fifth, while junior first baseman Chelsea Schott (Meriden, CT) keyed a three-run sixth with a two-run single, to put the Anchorwomen up, 7-2. Eastern (3-11, 1-1 LEC) got three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but RIC put the game out of reach with two more runs in the seventh as Venturini and sophomore third baseman Cristin Chiaverini (Pawtucket, RI) recorded RBI as RIC won, 9-5.


Fleming (2-2) earned the win, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits in 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore Amanda Troiano (Seekonk, MA) hurled 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the save (1).


In game two, Eastern scored three runs in the bottom of the second to earn a 4-2 win in the nightcap. Junior first baseman Kelsey Wood (North Dighton, MA) made it a 3-1 game with an RBI walk with the bases loaded in the third.


After the hosts tacked on a run in the fourth, the Anchorwomen scored their only other run on a balk in the top of the seventh. Troiano suffered the loss (2-1), allowing three earned runs on three hits in two innings of work.


Sophomore shortstop Kelsey Burgess (North Providence, RI) went 3-for-6 with four runs scored and a double, while Simmons went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI on the day.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Wheaton on Tuesday, April 4 (4 p.m.).
