MOREL PICKS UP FOUR HITS IN, 8-4, LOSS TO ELMS

Providence- R.I.Freshman shortstop Rommy Morel (Providence, RI) went 4-for-4 with one run scored and an RBI as the Rhode Island College baseball team fell to Elms, 8-4 in a non-conference contest played at Pontarelli Field on Wednesday afternoon.

 

RIC (11-7) freshman second baseman Nate Vigeant (Coventry, RI) had three hits and an RBI in the loss for the Anchormen. Junior starter Daniel Greaves (Warwick, RI) suffered the loss (2-2), allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

Elms (5-9) was paced by senior first baseman Kyle Planter (Northfield, MA), who went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, while senior designated hitter Jordan Zima (Berlin, CT) had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the win for the Blazers. Freshman reliever Jacob Graveline (Palmer, MA) picked up the win on the hill for Elms, throwing one scoreless inning of relief with strikeouts.

 

After taking the 3-0 lead early in the contest, Elms broke the game open in the top of the sixth with five runs, which included a two-run single from senior third baseman Tim Gelzinis (North Dighton, MA) to pull ahead 8-0.

 

RIC responded in the bottom of the sixth, pushing across four runs to cut the lead to 8-4. Morel and Vigeant each had RBI singles in the inning for the Anchormen. The Elms relief corps slammed the door shut on the hosts over the final three frames to lock down the win.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference play at home against UMass Boston (DH) on Saturday, April 8 (noon).
