Providence, R.I.--Sophomore catcher Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, RI) went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI as the Rhode Island College softball team was swept by Keene State in a Little East Conference doubleheader played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon. Keene State posted a 10-6 win in the opener and finished the day with a 10-7 victory in the nightcap.


Senior designated player Mary Sweeney (Portsmouth, RI) had a pair of hits with two runs scored and three RBI in the two games for RIC (6-12, 1-3 LEC). Senior left fielder Sarah Molin (Seymour, CT) and junior first baseman Kelsey Wood (North Dighton, MA) each tallied two hits on the day for the hosts.


Senior designated player Jenny Galavotti (Marion, MA) paced Keene State (11-8, 3-1 LEC), going 6-for-7 with three runs scored and seven RBI in the two wins. Sophomore pitcher Molly St. Germain (Dover, NH) was 4-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI. She also picked up the win pitching in game one and recorded the save in game two.


The opener saw Keene State jump out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first after a three-run single from junior Shae Crosby (Salem, CT). The Owls led, 6-1, heading into the bottom of the second before Rhode Island College responded and plated four runs, which included a two-run home run from senior center fielder Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI), to cut the lead to 6-5. After trading runs in the fourth, Keene tacked on two in the sixth on a two-run blast from junior first baseman Olivia Indorf (South Portland, ME) and pushed across a run in the seventh en route to the 10-6 victory.

Crosby was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Indorf had a pair of hits and four RBI. St. Germain (8-4) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored at the plate and also picked up the complete-game victory, allowing six runs on nine hits to go along with two strikeouts in seven innings of work.


Sophomore third baseman Cristin Chiaverini (Pawtucket, RI) was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Sophomore starting pitcher Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) (1-4) suffered the loss in the pitching circle, allowing six runs on six hits to go along with one strikeout in two innings. 


In the nightcap, Keene State held a 6-0 lead in the top of the second after a three-run home run from Galavotti. RIC chipped away with two runs in the second and two more in the third on a two-run double from Sweeney to make the score 6-4. The Anchorwomen knotted the game, 6-6, in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run from Sweeney. Keene State answered with three runs in the top of the second on Galavotti’s second three-run blast of the game to go up by three, 9-6. The Owls would then take the 10-7 victory.


Galavotti went 4-for-6 with two runs scored and six RBI in the win for Keene State, while senior second baseman Kayla Votto (Durham, CT) and Indorf each notched three hits for the visitors. Senior Summer Cavanaugh (Palmer, MA) notched the win (2-2) for Keene State, allowing two runs on four hits in two innings of relief.


Sweeney and Simmons each had two hits in the setback for the Anchorwomen. Gough took the setback for RIC, giving up three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Western Connecticut in a Little East Conference twinbill on Tuesday, April 18 (5 p.m.).
