Bristol, R.I.--Junior guard Roosevelt Shider (Meriden, CT) and freshman guard Chris Donaldson (Bridgeport, CT) each scored 21 points as the Rhode Island College menís basketball team posted an 85-78 victory against Clark in the opening round of the 2016 Roger Williams Invitational played at the Campus Recreation Center on Friday evening.


Sophomore forward Benjamin Vezele (Providence, RI) tallied a double-double for RIC (2-0) with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Donaldson narrowly missed a double-double with 21 points, nine assists and seven boards. Shider rounded out the double-figure scorers for RIC with 21 points. The Anchormen shot an impressive 53.3% (32-for-60) from the field and forced Clark into 15 turnovers in the win.

Senior forward Lamar Berk (Saint Augustine, FL) led the way for Clark with 15 points, five rebounds and two assists, while junior Josh Pisacreta (Andover, MA) tallied 15 points, three assists and two boards in the loss for the Cougars.


Clark (1-1) led throughout the early stages of the first half before RIC took its first lead of the game on a layup by freshman guard Chris Farrington (Fall River, MA), making the score 11-10. Clark responded, however, and used a 12-1 run to take its first double-digit lead, 22-12 on a layup by senior guard Joe Atkinson (Milford, MA) with 8:57 left in the first half. Clark led by as many as 15 points in the first half before taking the 40-30 lead heading into halftime.


RIC chipped away at the lead in the second half and regained the advantage, 55-54 on a three-pointer by Shider with 9:43 left in the contest. The Anchormen continued to build on their advantage and took their first double-digit lead when another three-pointer by Shider gave the team the 77-65 lead with just under four minutes left on the clock. RIC then held on for the 85-78 decision.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will take on host Roger Williams in the championship contest on Saturday, Nov. 19 (3 p.m.).
